Anticipated Benefits
How Smart Shots Will Benefit Providers
This project aims to improve the provider workflow for pediatric immunization management. While there is a dearth of evidence regarding the role of EHR immunization management tools as a contributor to provider cognitive burden, there is strong evidence that EHR design generally mediates cognitive workload and its sequelae. In this project, reported task time and mental workload are anticipated to be reduced, and confidence levels are anticipated to increase when using the intervention. Improvement in any of these areas is indicative that the project made progress toward its stated goal.

Measuring the Benefits
Three outcome measures will be used to measure the project’s performance and data will be collected using a single post-participation survey. The Survey will be conducted using a Microsoft Forms hosted by Herzing University.
The survey is designed to ensure anonymity; no personally identifiable information will be collected with survey responses.
Measure 1: Change in Cognitive Workload
The project’s first measure is the difference in reported mental workload between the standard EHR workflow and the workflow using the vaccine forecast report, measured using a 10-point scale. For this measure, the participant will be asked two questions, one referencing the standard EHR workflow and one in the context of using the Smart Shots report.

Measure 2: Change in Task Time
The second measure is the reported estimated time savings per visit, in minutes, between the standard EHR workflow and the workflow using the vaccine forecast report. For this measure, the participant will be asked to estimate the sime savings per visit, if any, while using the report.

Measure 3: Change in Confidence Levels
The third measure is the difference in reported confidence levels when performing specific immunization management tasks, measured using 10-point scales. For this measure, the tasks to be assessed are:
- Developing a clear picture of the patient's current immunization status
- Identifying all immunizations to be given at the current visit
- Identifying vaccines that may be indicated based on special circumstances
- Identifying existing invalid doses on the chart

Dissemination of Findings
Findings will be disseminated in compliance with Herzing University DNP program guidelines, to the extent allowed under any embargo requirements.
