Welcome to Smart Shots
Smart Shots was an academic quality improvement project conducted at 60 primary care offices across the United States.
The project was developed and implemented by Joe Brusatto, DNP, RN, NI-BC.
The project demonstrated the value and feasibility of implementing vaccine
forecasting clinical decision support in pediatric primary care with minimal investment using an innovative, low-cost,
evidence-based report in the patient chart.

Focusing on the Challenge of
Pediatric Immunization Management
Evaluating and planning immunizations for children is a
complex, time-consuming and cognitively burdensome task for providers.
EHRs often fail to live up to
the promise of improving the provider experience. Some immunization management designs add to cognitive workload, contributing to heuristic decision-making, errors, and provider burnout.

Addressing the Problem with the
Smart Shots Report
Smart Shots is a CDS-generated report
that analyzes immunization data in the patient chart to determine vaccination status, identify gaps, and forecast
vaccination needs.
The report implements the same CDS technology used by immunization
registries and is optimized for the cognitive work of immunization management.

A Project Designed to
Benefit Providers
Thie project has been designed with the aim of reducing provider cognitive workload and task time while improving
their confidence when managing immunizations.
While patients are likely to experience improved care,
this project's outcome measures are focused on the demonstrating the impact of evaluated vaccine
forecasting CDS on provider experience.
